QUALITY JOURNALISM IN THE DIGITAL AGE

THE 14th WORLD EDITORS FORUM

INTRODUCTION

In June 2006 the 13th World Editors Forum saw 350 editors - a record number - meet in Moscow. For the next Forum we are going south to Cape Town. The annual World Editors Forum meetings have won a global reputation for giving working editors presentations, debates and networking opportunities which enrich their knowledge and provide ideas to put to immediate use.

In the City of 'Good Hope', the first South African daily newspaper, the Cape Times, was published in 1876. In this melting pot city with influences from KhoÔsan, Zulu, Xhosa, Portugal, Holland, France, England and India, we will discuss 'Quality Journalism in the Digital Age' in nine sessions and at eleven social events.

What's new at the 2007 World Editors Forum:

- an in-depth reflection about the future of journalism with Mario Vargas Llosa as keynote speaker: a writer who is a journalist and a journalist who is a writer
- the first release of the 'Newsroom Barometer', an international survey focused on editorial strategies, integrated newsroom and the future of journalism
- special opportunities for meeting the leaders of South Africa including the South African Minister of Finance, Trevor Manuel.
- panel debates and sessions on integrated newsrooms, design issues and transparency.

We welcome Reuters as a privileged partner of the Forum. In the Reuters Masterclass, we will explore the impact of social networks and user generated content on journalism, and how newspapers can respond.

Make a date to join us at the rendez-vous in Cape Town on Sunday 3 June at the Editors Cocktail. It's going to be a great Forum!

Web 2.0: is user generated content bringing anything new to news?
What does the future look like in a world in which the consumer is increasingly taking over the printing press, the dark room and the television studio? What is the impact of this new type of content and community on newspapers and journalism? WEF and Reuters will explore the lessons learnt, models that have worked and failed in the past, and debate how user-generated content and social news networks will potentially impact the future of journalism.

Are web-designed Home Pages inspiring Front Pages of print editions? Are the readers so accustomed to online editions that they want the same 'look and feel' in print? To answer these questions, we have gathered designers with different points of view - those who think that a 'new fusion design' will emerge and those that believe that the two designs will never merge.

With:

Africa is big and Africa is diverse, but some say the continent remains stuck with the same problems.
